RMC200 LC8 Load Cell Module

The new LC8 Load Cell Module is Delta's latest I/O module for the RMC200 motion controller platform, offering eight load cell inputs without the need for external signal conditioners. This module is expected to be exceptionally useful in test applications where it is needed to transition from position to pressure/force control quickly. The LC8 is designed for precise, high speed load cell input up to 8kHz sampling rate.

The maximum sensitivity is 5mV/V in full Wheatstone bridge configuration, while half- and quarter-bridge configurations can be used with a user-supplied bridge completion circuit. Excitation voltage of 6.75 V is provided for 350 ohm load cells, and lower resistance load cells are supported provided the overall current draw limits are not exceeded. Users can also provide external excitation voltage so long as the input range and maximum differential limits are not exceeded. Four and six wire load cells are supported, and a sense wire input is provided on all eight inputs for wire voltage drop compensation.

Says Delta CEO Steve Nylund, “Delta motion controllers feature the ability to transition smoothly between position and pressure/force control, making them well-suited for testing applications. The LC8 module represents Delta’s ongoing commitment to providing the most powerful and versatile products for this market.” Continues Nylund, “In concert with Delta’s powerful, easy-to-use RMCTools software, we believe the RMC motion controllers represent the best value available for high-performance applications.”

System Integrators: The Key to Project Success

by Aaron Heinrich

"For a host of reasons, many companies—including those making or modifying hydraulic components, controls and equipment—strongly resist asking for help when it comes to product development and implementation. Most of their reasons may revolve around ego and short-term cost considerations, but some companies just insist on doing everything in-house. From a business perspective, however, “doing everything” entails undertaking tasks outside a company’s core competencies, which is often a fraught decision."

Delta Webinars

This quarter we had two great presentations from David McNichol and Jacob Paso in July and September. If you missed the live presentation you can still view a recording of them.  You can find webinars at www.deltamotion.com/education/webinars, as a pinned topic in Delta's Discussion Forum, or on YouTube at DeltaMotionControl.

September - RMC100/RMCWin Troubleshooting

Many RMC100 motion controllers are still reliably functioning many years after the controller’s introduction. But the RMCWin software is not as familiar to many new users. In this webinar, Delta’s Applications Engineer and Motion Product Manager Jacob Paso shares tips for using RMCWin to troubleshoot system problems on RMC100-based controls. Familiarity with RMCWin software is not required for this webinar.

July - Introduction to RMC Feedback Types

Data input is an important consideration for optimum system control. In this webinar, David covers examples of different transducer types, as well as the different communication modes that can be used. There are also be examples of common transducers and settings. Familiarity with the Plot Manager and the Axis Tools menu will be helpful for viewing this presentation.

Distributor Highlight

Delta Control - South Korea

Delta Control is an authorized RMC distributor in Bucheon, South Korea. Delta Control serves a variety of machine OEMs supporting many of Korea's Tier 1 manufacturers, with a special emphasis in automotive manufacturing and testing. Delta Control is also Temposonics (formerly MTS Sensors) distributor and service center. Delta Control's engineers can fully assist users in developing and commissioning control systems for machine systems, both new and retrofit applicaitons.

Delta Control moved into a new location in Bucheon, a suburb of Seoul, within the last few years, giving them the space to set up a demonstration and lab area for customer demos. This new facility also provides more workspace for their repair and calibration services. Delta Computer Systems is fortunate to have local distributors like Delta Control with a high degree of technical skill and controls expertise. We congratulate Delta Control on their many years of success, and we look forward to continued achievement together.

Lunchbox Sessions Live with Carl Dyke

Presented by FluidPower World and sponsored by Delta Computer Systems

Electronic Controls & Sensors for Hydraulic Systems

This summer FluidPower World partnered with Carl Dyke's Lunchbox Sessions company to present high quality technical training for hydraulics, with an special emphasis on quickly usable information for plant technicians and engineers. Delta Computer Systems sponsored Carl's session on Electronic Controls & Sensors for Hydraulic Systems, a great introduction to fast, precise hydraulic system control. If you missed the live session, a recording is available on the Lunchbox Sessions YouTube channel.

Tech Tip

Magnetostrictive Linear Displacement Transducer magnets

Linear Magnetostrictive Displacement Transducers (LMDTs) have become the state-of-the-art for accurately measuring hydraulic cylinder displacement, for very good reasons. They offer excellent shock/vibration tolerance, they are non-contact so they have excellent lifetime, and because they internally mount in the cylinder, they are protected from damage for the most part. As electronics have gotten better and better, the resolution has become outstanding. Temposonics new R-series V sensor using an Serial Synchronous Interface (SSI) signal advertises 0.1 micron resolution, for example. But sometimes displacement transducers can trip users up.

One of Delta's RSMs shared this plot from a user. What you will notice on this plot is the reported position. With the cylinder positioned against the near stop and motionless, the position sensor reports the position as maximum travel; in other words, full stroke of the cylinder.

What could be happening here? After further investigation, what the user discovered was that the cylinder had a LMDT magnet from one manufacturer installed - but the rod and sensor head was from a completely different manufacturer! Because the magnet is installed in the cap of the cylinder, it is very difficult to visually confirm what brand magnet is installed. Some of the recent models of LMDTs can work with other manufacturer's magnets, but the settings must be set correctly in the sensor head.

Once the situation with this LMDT was corrected, the feedback signal became normal. The user was able to configure the feedback within their RMC motion controller and this system now controls well.
